🔴 CRITICAL SAFETY
WARNINGS
SEAL BITES / RABIES — MEDICAL EMERGENCY
- Rabies confirmed in Cape fur seals.
- Any bite/scratch requires immediate hospital treatment.
- Wash wound with soap + water for 10–15 minutes.
- Report possible rabies exposure at the ER immediately.
HYPOTHERMIA — MEDICAL EMERGENCY
- Remove wet clothing and shelter from wind.
- Warm the core first (chest, neck, groin).
- Handle gently — rough movement can trigger cardiac arrest.
- Do not give alcohol or rub the skin.
Marine Life
SHARKS
- Avoid dawn/dusk and murky water.
- Exit water calmly if sharks are sighted.
- Swim in groups where possible.
SEALS (INC. RABID)
- Do not approach or interact.
- Exit immediately if seal acts aggressively or unusually.
- Erratic or overly friendly behavior = DANGER.
BLUEBOTTLES / JELLYFISH
- Rinse with seawater (never fresh water).
- Exit water if stings are widespread.
- Seek help if pain is severe or systemic.
💩 SEWAGE / WATER POLLUTION
- Do not swim if water is discoloured or smells foul.
- Avoid swimming after heavy rainfall (stormwater runoff).
- Check for City of Cape Town beach closures / advisories.
- If exposed: shower immediately, avoid swallowing water.
- Seek medical help if you develop gastro, ear or skin infections.
Cold Water & Exposure
- Cold + wind dramatically increases heat loss.
- Shivering, slurred speech, confusion = DANGER SIGNS.
- Get out early — do not "push through".
- Always have a warm change and shelter ready.
